IndigiNews Journalism training — you’re invited

IndigiNews is onboarding new reporting staff, and the public is invited to participate in the training process. Anyone interested can attend the three-day journalism training series, scheduled Oct. 25-27 via Zoom.

Pay what you can and participate to any extent you choose — take part in the full training or pick a daily theme or individual workshop of interest.

Day 1: Indigenizing Journalism

Decolonizing journalism (10 a.m.-noon): History of newspapers in Canada, stereotypes, colonial mythology, misrepresentation, racism, discrimination, inaccuracy, Indigenous storytelling

Trauma-informed & anti-oppressive practices (1-3 p.m.): syilx journalist Kelsie Kilawna teaches trauma-informed reporting techniques rooted in syilx values, managing editor Emilee Gilpin teaches anti-oppressive anti-racist approaches

Day 2: Journalism Training

Finding & pitching stories (10 a.m.-noon): Learn where to find stories, how to pitch, how to be clear with community members about intentions and expectations.

Interviewing (1-2 p.m.): Preparing for and facilitating a strong interview, building a question line, framing questions, pulling the story from the interview

Editing & fact-checking (2-3 p.m.): Working collaboratively with an editor, making your case, the importance of fact-checking and balanced reporting

Journalism today & tomorrow (3-4 p.m.): What is the role and responsibility of a journalist? How do we work with objectivity? Valuing, respecting and adding to the profession.

Day 3: Child Welfare

Reporting on the child welfare system (10 a.m.-noon): How to work WITH people with lived experience, hold folks in powerful positions to account, and practice in a trauma-informed way
