IRCC Announces Free Immigration Documents Replacement For Nova Scotians

Last Updated On 26 July 2023, 9:24 AM EDT (Toronto Time)

On July 25, the Honourable Sean Fraser, Minister of IRCC, announced measures for those who have been harmed by the floods and who require the replacement of crucial papers or the extension or restoration of their status in Canada.

These people can apply for these measures by contacting the Ministry of Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship.

Those Canadians, permanent residents, and temporary residents of Nova Scotia who have been directly affected by the flooding will be eligible to get free replacement papers from Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).

These include permanent resident cards, evidence of citizenship, Canadian citizenship certificates, Canadian passports, and other travel papers that have either been lost, damaged, destroyed, or rendered unavailable as a direct result of this natural catastrophe.

Those international students, temporary foreign workers, and other visitors whose status will expire by November 30, 2023 and who have been directly impacted by the floods in Nova Scotia will be able to apply for a free extension or restoration of their status in Canada if they have been directly affected by the flooding in Nova Scotia.

This implies that temporary employees who are unable to work because their place of employment is closed due to the floods do not need to worry since they will be able to extend their status and stay until their place of employment reopens.

They will be allowed to stay until their workplace reopens. In addition, if their lessons are postponed or cancelled, overseas students have the option of extending their study permits and completing their degrees without incurring any additional fees.

These extraordinary measures will continue to remain in force until the 30th of November in 2023. They provide Canadians, permanent residents, and temporary residents with the opportunity to focus on what is most important to them at this time, which is their families, their homes, and their communities, while also giving them time to resolve any concerns related to their documentation or their temporary status.

In the following days, more details on the individuals who are qualified for the special measures, the application process, and the replacement papers that are covered by the measures will be posted on the website of the IRCC.

Those who submit an application to have their work permit extended will continue to enjoy the benefits of maintained status throughout the time that their application is being considered, and they will keep their employment eligibility in accordance with the terms of their original work permit.

Government of Canada’s Response to Floods In Nova Scotia

The Honourable Bill Blair, Minister of Emergency Preparedness, approved a Request for Federal Assistance from the Province of Nova Scotia to assist with their response to this emergency on Sunday, July 23.

Two CH-149 Cormorant search and rescue helicopters from 14 Wing Greenwood of the Canadian Armed Forces assisted RCMP-led search and rescue operations.

The Canadian Coast Guard (CCG) and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) have also been deployed and continue to aid in these efforts.

In addition to the deployment of search and rescue personnel, the federal government has made available the following resources:

The Canadian Coast Guard has provided Hants with personnel and equipment, including helicopters.

Small vessels stand ready to provide assistance to remote coastal communities in the event that their access is restricted.

Transport Canada provides National Aerial Surveillance Program (NASP) aircraft to aid in the assessment of damage to roads, bridges, critical infrastructure, and watershed impacts, and to provide information in near real-time.

Indigenous Services Canada (ISC) provides funding through the Emergency Management Assistance Program to First Nation communities for preparedness, mitigation, response, and rehabilitation in order to increase their capacity to respond to emergency events, such as flooding.

ISC is collaborating closely with First Nation communities, the Confederation of Mainland Mi’kmaq, and the Government of Nova Scotia to ensure that First Nations have the resources necessary to respond to this emergency situation.

Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) continues to provide the Nova Scotia Emergency Management Office (NS EMO) with weather forecasting capabilities.

As part of its ongoing cost-shared hydrometric program with the province, ECCC is actively monitoring water level and flow conditions throughout Nova Scotia to support local emergency response and repairing damaged river monitoring equipment to maintain operations.

In addition to assisting in SAR operations, the RCMP is supporting local forces.
