Celebration: Chinese Canadian Legacies in British Columbia

A historic book, Celebration: Chinese Canadian Legacies in British Columbia was publicly released at the British Columbia Legislature on March 13, 2018.

It tells the stories of notable Chinese British Columbians and the contributions that Chinese Canadians have made to the history and prosperity of the province.

The idea for the book came from seven public consultation forums across the province that were part of the historical wrongs consultation process. Participants identified issues surrounding historic discriminatory legislation and its impact on the Chinese community in B.C.

The resulting publication is a compilation of poignant stories and historic visual elements that cover a wide timespan – from the 19th to 21st centuries. Selected by the Legacy Initiatives Advisory Council (LIAC), it profiles 96 members of the Chinese community in B.C. representing a variety of fields including business, sports, medicine, science, the arts, and social activism. The book is a permanent legacy that serves to educate people about past discriminatory practices, while championing heritage values and the community’s achievements.

Celebration: Chinese Canadian Legacies in British Columbia will be made available at cultural centres, public libraries and schools throughout the province in the fall of 2018. As well, eBook and Print-on-Demand copies may be purchased from major online book retailers or through the publisher.
